Stromae has chosen Time magazine’s YouTube channel for the publication of his third video in his “Stromae Takes America” series, “Tous les mêmes.” The video shows the song’s divided male/female character at a wedding ceremony: Stromae’s marrying himself, because, as he says with tongue firmly in cheek, he “loves himself too much.”
The ceremony takes place at Iglesia de Jesuchristo Horeb in Los Angeles. Stromae’s musicians, Florian Rossi, Yoshio Masuda, Simon Le Saint, and Manoli Avgoustinatos, provide a lovely a cappella version of “The Bridal Chorus” (known as “Here Comes the Bride”) as a processional.
After the ceremony, Stromae conducts a short lesson, but here’s where he breaks out of the “electronic artist” box. He’s just as effective as the leader of this barbershop quintet. He’s got his laptop all set up, but it’s really just for appearances: it’s nothing but a glorified metronome. When he tries to bring up the “drums” track on the laptop, he gets a dull error alert, eliciting smiles from the musicians. That’s because no software’s involved this time–all there is to the song are the vocal tracks, a clap, and a snap! Finally, to cap things off, there’s the performance. It’s just a stanza and chorus, for the “wedding guests.”
Leaving the ceremony, as he’s dragging his rolling suitcase with cans tied to it across the street, Stromae apparently takes the wedding rings from his fingers and throws them over his shoulder.
This video showcases the vocal talents of Stromae’s musicians beautifully. It was directed by Jérôme Guiot, who talks about the process behind the “Stromae Takes America” series in an interview you can read here. In keeping with the team’s goal to use these videos to “take some air out of” the character called Stromae, they’ve chosen to keep a tiny blooper that happens at 2:58. If you can spot what the problem was, leave a comment and let us know.

Stay tuned…we’re expecting at least one more video to come in the “Stromae Takes America” series.
